Finding Purpose After Burnout: When Your Body Says ‘No’ But Your Soul Whispers ‘Yes’

It hit me on a random Tuesday morning. I was standing in my kitchen, coffee in hand, staring blankly at the fridge like it held the answer to a question I didn’t know how to ask. After years of climbing, striving, producing, and leading I was completely, utterly burned out!

To the outside world, I looked successful. I had built a creative consultancy, been in C-suite roles, led brilliant teams, and checked every box. But inside, I was unraveling. I was exhausted, not just in body, but in spirit. I wasn’t sleeping. My digestion was off. My brain felt foggy. I found myself questioning everything: What am I doing? Who is this life really for? And… what now?

That was the beginning of a very different kind of journey, not one with a promotion or a polished LinkedIn announcement at the end, but one toward something quieter, deeper, and ultimately more fulfilling: purpose.

Burnout Isn’t Just a Career Crisis…. It’s a Whole-Body Wake-Up Call

What I’ve learned through my own experience and now in coaching other women is that burnout isn’t just about working too hard. It’s about living out of alignment for too long. It’s when our minds override our bodies, our calendars ignore our cravings, and our ambition drowns out our intuition.

As an Integrative Health Coach, I began to realize that our careers are not separate from our health. They are deeply, biologically intertwined. The foods we eat, the stress we carry, the boundaries we fail to set, all of it accumulates. It lives in our cells. And it can either support us in our purpose… or slowly siphon our energy until we feel like a ghost in our own life.

Rediscovering Purpose (and Appetite)

When I stepped away from my executive role, I didn’t have a five-year plan. What I had was a lot of fatigue, a hunger I couldn’t name, and a deep desire to feel alive again.

The first thing I did? I slowed down. I started feeding myself like someone who mattered. Nutrient-dense meals, yes, but also creative space, meaningful conversations, and long walks with music. I stopped numbing and started listening.

And in that quiet, a different voice emerged. One that remembered who I was before I began performing for success. One that cared deeply about women, wellness, and leadership that doesn’t require self-sacrifice.

From that place, I rebuilt. Not just a new career, but a new relationship with myself. And that has made all the difference.

What Does Purpose Feel Like?

Purpose doesn’t always show up as a lightning bolt. For most people I coach, it begins as a whisper. A nudge. A question: Is this really it? And if we’re willing to sit with that question without rushing to fix or flee something profound happens.

Purpose feels like energy. Like clarity. Like being nourished instead of depleted by your work. It’s not always easy, but it is always aligned.

And here’s what I know: You don’t have to burn out to begin again. You don’t have to choose between career success and wellbeing. You get to have both but it starts by telling the truth about what’s no longer working.

As Founder and Chief Evolution Officer at CrystalClear Leadership I’m driven by one purpose: guiding individuals and organizations through meaningful transformation. Whether I’m coaching a mid-career woman through burnout or helping a global team redesign how they lead through change, my work is about evolution not just in strategy, but in mindset, wellbeing, and identity. Supporting others as they redefine success and reconnect with their purpose is not just what I do, it’s who I am.

What Now? A Gentle Invitation

If you’re mid-career and feeling lost, tired, or disconnected, I see you. And I want you to know: you are not broken, you are being invited into something deeper. Small, consistent shifts in how we nourish ourselves physically, emotionally, and mentally can reignite clarity and resilience. So if you’re in a season of burnout or change, start simple: hydrate before your coffee, take a screen-free lunch, move your body in a way that feels joyful, and say no just once this week where you’d normally say yes.

These aren’t just wellness tips they’re acts of self-leadership. Your purpose lives in the body as much as in the boardroom. Listen closely. It’s speaking.

Here are a few small steps you might take this week:

  • Check in with your body: Are you energized or drained at the end of your workday? What is your digestion, sleep, or mood trying to tell you?
  • Feed yourself well: Not just with food, but with beauty, rest, and people who make you feel seen.
  • Ask the real question: If you weren’t afraid, what would you change?

And if you’re craving a safe, supportive space to explore what’s next, I’d love to connect.

What does “purpose” feel like to you right now? Have you ever ignored your burnout signals?

Let’s talk about it, your truth might just be someone else’s permission slip!
